Engage & Listen

Last week, I spent a few days in Washington, D.C., with the National Potato Council visiting our Idaho representatives and senators. Our goal was to highlight specific issues affecting our state, including concerns about trade, immigration, and research.

I know that some people wonder if it helps at all to have these conversations. Do they even listen? My experience is that they do more often than not, and Idaho punches above its weight on many issues because of their knowledge and experience.

I’m not claiming they’re perfect. But I continue to believe that the best way to have a say in both our state and national government requires that we stay involved and that we engage the folks who represent us.

It also reminds me of the importance of listening, which I’m trying to do as I travel around District 34 and meet with people. We agree on many things, but when there’s disagreement, the conversation doesn’t need to come to a screeching halt.

Instead, my goal is to hear others out and see if I can learn more. It may seem like a small thing, but I expect it’s one of those small things that compound in value over time.
